This 15th century headdress is based on a painting from 1430 by the great late medieval painter Jan van Eyck: Man with the Blue Chaperon. Jan van Eyck painted several portraits of people wearing a chaperon, a common headdress in the Middle Ages. A well-known example is Portrait of a Man with a Red Turban , which is probably a self-portrait. In this painting, Van Eyck used the chaperon as a turban.
The chaperon was a hood that fell to the shoulders and covered both the head and neck, while the face remained uncovered. In the early Middle Ages, this headgear was mainly worn by poor people, but from the 14th century it also became popular among the wealthier classes.
