Product description

The spearhead with a leaf-shaped design was a common feature across different periods and cultures throughout the history of the spear. This type of spearhead was already employed in the Bronze Age and remained popular well into the Middle Ages, including the Viking Age. The so-called "winged" or "perforated" spear, often associated with the Normans, actually has its origins in the Frankish Carolingian era. The Vikings adopted this design and utilised it as both a war spear and a hunting spear, designed specifically for hunting wild boar and big game. The "wings" or "perforations" on either side of the spearhead served multiple purposes. They prevented over-penetration on a thrust, making it harder to pull the spear back. In addition, they provided effective protection against enemy attacks during combat and gave extra control and protection whilst fighting wounded, enraged animals. This spearhead with a leaf-shaped blade and "wings" is crafted from high-quality hardened EN45 carbon steel. The design is very similar to the Carolingian spearheads commonly used by warriors and hunters in the early Middle Ages. This spearhead is therefore particularly well-suited to Viking and medieval settings (approximately 8th/9th to 11th/12th century). The total length of the spearhead is about 43.5 cm, with a blade about 34 cm long. The blade is reinforced with a striking raised ridge in the middle, which provides extra strength and power when piercing. The protruding "wings" have a thickness of about 4 mm. The spearhead comes with two pre-drilled holes, permitting secure attachment to a wooden shaft of your choice to create your very own spear. Please note: the shaft and additional mounting materials are not included.
