This buckler is classified as a type IB according to Herbert Schmidt’s typology. It has a round shape with sloping edges. The earliest depictions of this type of buckler appear in the early 14th-century Tower manuscript, though such shields were likely already in use well into the 13th century. Bucklers like this one remained in use until the 16th century.

Bucklers were ideal for hand-to-hand combat and were often used by armored knights and archers. This buckler is blackened, which protects it against rust and weathering. This method was also commonly applied to pieces of armor during the 15th century.
