The buckler is classified as a type IB according to Herbert Schmidt's typology. It has a round shape with sloping edges. The earliest depictions of this type of buckler appear in the early 14th-century Tower manuscript, though such shields were likely already in use well into the 13th century. Bucklers of this kind remained in use until the 16th century.

Bucklers were well-suited to hand-to-hand combat and were often employed by armoured knights and archers. The buckler is blackened, which protects it against rust and weathering. This method was also commonly applied to pieces of armour during the 15th century.
