Chaperons such as these were worn from the early Middle Ages to the beginning of the sixteenth century. Craftsmen, farmers, pedlars and other citizens of the lower classes were particularly fond of chaperons. The chaperon was well-suited to those working outdoors or travelling.
The hood protects the head from dirt, whilst also keeping the head warm against strong winds, cold, and rain. It is likewise comfortable to wear during cold nights, keeping both the head and neck warm. The hood is long and reaches to the lower back.
