Product description

These medieval chausses are made of cotton and are delivered in pairs, including laces. The laces have brass lace ends, or aiglets, which are exact replicas of medieval originals.

The existence of garments like this can be traced back to the Neolithic era, but such leg fashion only became popular during the High Middle Ages. Pople wore two loose chausses under the tunic, one per leg, and fastened them to the braies (underpants) or to a belt with laces. Medieval stained glass windows, paintings and manuscripts show that braies were often worn in all sorts of colors, from sober to bright. It was also not unusual to combine two colors of chausse to create a mi-parti garment. Originals can be seen in the Morgan Picture Bible and the Tres Riches Heures de Duc de Berry, for example. Chausses were worn by all classes of society.
