This pendant shows in fine detail a tournament knight on horseback with raised lance, coat of arms and helmet decoration; the horse carries one chainmail shirt. The design is modeled on a medieval sign from the 14th century, about a third larger than this pendant, which is in the Museum of London.

In the Middle Ages, knightly tournaments were a regular part of state occasions and holidays, and marked, among other things, the conclusion of treaties, weddings and royal visits.
