Merovingian brooch Limons, 6th-7th century, silvered bronze

This size round brooch is based on the Merovingian jeweled disc of Limons, a Frankish masterpiece in solid gold dating between the last quarter of the 6th and the first quarter of the 7th century. The original is housed in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.

The style of the disc is designated as animal style II, a Germanic art form that was widespread during that period. On the front, the face of Christ within a cross is depicted, surrounded by three wild boars; the Chi-Rho Christogram and the letters Alpha and Omega refer to the same Christian ideology. Instead of genuine cloisonné enamel, the red inlay elements here are made of red glass. On the back is a sturdy needle construction that is also suitable for heavy fabrics, such as a woolen cloak.

Executed in silvered bronze, and thus an impressive accessory for anyone wishing to portray the early Middle Ages and the Merovingian period.
