Merovingian disc fibula with sun wheel, bronze

Product description

This disc fibula with animal head motifs in the form of a sun wheel is based on a Germanic decorative disc from the Merovingian period, from the late 6th or early 7th century, from the collection of the Römisch-Germanisches Museum in Cologne.

Executed in bronze. The original has a diameter of 8.4 cm; this fibula is reduced to 4.5 cm. On the back is a sturdy pin.

Sun wheel motifs were used in Merovingian times by Franks, Alemanni and Bavarians as hanging ornaments for women's clothing, often with animal style I motifs such as snake or bird heads, and were presumably regarded as protective symbols. A fine addition to your equipment for early medieval re-enactment.
