Merovingian disc fibula with sun wheel, silvered bronze

Product description

This disc fibula with animal head motifs in the shape of a sun wheel is based on a Germanic ornamental disc from the Merovingian period, from the late 6th or early 7th century, from the collection of the Römisch-Germanisches Museum in Cologne.

Executed in silvered bronze. The original has a diameter of 8.4 cm; this fibula is reduced to 4.5 cm. On the back side there is a sturdy pin.

Sun wheel motifs were used among Franks, Alemanni and Bavarians in Merovingian times as hanging ornaments for women's dress, often with animal style I motifs such as snake or bird heads, and were presumably regarded as protective symbols. A fine addition to your equipment for re-enactment from the early Middle Ages.
