Product description
The barbute has been crafted after a beautiful original from 1465. The original is currently housed in the Musée de l'Armée in Paris, and was produced in the Lombard city of Missaglia.
The barbute is a type of sallet developed so that the wearer would not need to attach a chainmail camail or other neck protection to the helmet. Barbutes such as this one originated in northern Italy in the early 15th century. The forward-curving edges of the helmet provide protection for the cheeks and face, whilst not obstructing the field of vision.
The helmet is constructed from 1.6 mm thick steel and fitted with a leather liner. Its decoration and design make this barbute a distinctive piece. It weighs approximately 2 kg and is well-suited to a head circumference of up to 62 cm.
