The chestplate is based on fifteenth-century historical originals found in paintings and murals by Italian masters, such as Piero della Francesca, who depicted a considerable quantity of similar armour pieces. Chest plates of this kind were worn by infantrymen from the second half of the fifteenth century until the sixteenth century. This type of armour was crafted in Italy and was also sold to other European countries. Typical of the Milanese style is the overlapping and bevelled plate over the chest, designed to deflect attacks. The cuirass protects the chest and abdomen, whilst the backplate protects the back. It is fitted with leather straps to adjust it to size and different suspensions for other armour pieces. It is supplied complete with a matching backplate.
