The Anglo-Saxon king Harold Godwinson was the successor of Edward the Confessor in January 1066. Directly after his coronation, his brothers Tostig and Harald Haldrada of Norway commenced a war primarily aimed at reconquering the former Danelaw.

Harold's army was defeated during the Battle of Fulford on 20 September 1066. However, this defeat was not decisive, and Harold defeated the combined invasion army of the Norse Vikings just a few days before another Norman invasion army would cross the Channel. William the Conqueror had planned his expedition very well. He travelled to the south of England, where the army of Harold was already weary after the Battle of Stamford Bridge and the subsequent march southward at considerable speed. King Harold was killed during the Battle of Hastings in October 1066. This marks the end of the Anglo-Saxon reign over England.
