To attach the fitting, there are three pins on the back. Simply insert the pins through the leather holes, employ pliers to slightly bend the pin tips inward, and then tap them flat with a hammer. This will secure the fitting firmly and evenly onto the belt.

Originally, scallop shells were used as scoops and drinking vessels along the coast of Galicia. It became a common tradition for pilgrims to attach a shell to their walking stick or clothing on their journey home as a visible sign that they had successfully completed their pilgrimage and reached their destination. In the late Middle Ages, enterprising merchants began a profitable souvenir trade, selling pewter versions of these scallop shells amongst other pilgrim badges.
