This pendant is modeled on a medieval pilgrim sign depicting Saint Adrian, who was considered the protector of soldiers, blacksmiths and messengers, and was also invoked as protection against the plague. The historic pilgrim sign comes from the abbey of Sint-Adriaan in Geraardsbergen (Belgium) and dates from the period 1460-1480.

Adrian of Nicomedia was a Roman soldier who was martyred for his Christian faith; his relics were transferred to Geraardsbergen in 1175, making the abbey an important place of pilgrimage. On the sign he is depicted in full armor, with a sword in one hand and an anvil in the other. The broken shape lends itself well to sewing onto clothing, and thanks to the eye at the back you can also wear the pendant around your neck on a cord or chain.

A beautiful accessory for those who are interested in late medieval pilgrimage and saint worship, and an attractive addition to a reenactment outfit from that period.
