Product description
Bonnets of this kind were worn by ladies for centuries, from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. The cap is well-suited to medieval, Renaissance, Tudor and early modern reenactment of the Golden Age and similar periods. Contrary to what most films depict, ladies always wore headwear in public. Only unmarried girls and prostitutes went through life with their heads uncovered. Caps were particularly common amongst women of the bourgeoisie and the working class, such as peasant women, citizens, landladies, market vendors and the like. Caps were also highly practical: the fabric protected the hair from dirt during heavy and dirty work. Pleated caps remain part of various traditional costumes in western and eastern Europe and the United States today.
