Bonnets of this kind were worn by ladies for centuries, from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century. The cap is well-suited to medieval, Renaissance, Tudor and early modern reenactment of the Golden Age and similar periods. Contrary to what most films show, ladies always wore headwear in public. Only unmarried girls and prostitutes went through life with their heads uncovered. Particularly women from the bourgeoisie and the working class wore such caps — amongst them peasant women, citizens, landladies, market vendors and the like. Caps were also practical, as the fabric protected the hair from dirt during heavy and dirty work. Pleated caps remain part of various traditional costumes in western and eastern Europe and the United States today.
