The dress is based on Renaissance originals depicted in paintings, such as those of the Medici family. Dresses of this kind were worn principally during the Italian Renaissance; particularly distinctive is the elegant puffed-sleeve silhouette. Puffed sleeves were fashionable at European courts, a style subsequently adopted by the bourgeoisie. They were also a sign of wealth, worn to demonstrate that sufficient means existed to purchase abundant quantities of fabric. The dress features a V-neck with an additional strip of fabric.
