Product description
King Richard I of England, better known as Richard Lionheart, was the son of Henry II and reigned between 1189 and 1199. Together with King Philip II of France, Richard embarked upon a crusade to the Holy Land, where he fought against Saladin. Richard conquered Cyprus, and later Acre, whilst also attempting to reconquer Jerusalem from the Muslims. Richard went into history as a crusader.
During his return to England, Richard was taken prisoner. In 1194 he was freed in return for an enormous sum of money that nearly bankrupted England. Back in England, he immediately commenced a war against his former ally Philip II. Richard was killed during the siege of a French castle. His successor was King John.
The coin is a replica of originals that were minted during the reign of King Richard I of England. It is crafted from leadless pewter.
