This crescent-shaped pendant is a detailed replica of a Roman ornament that originally served as a horse harness decoration, based on an example from an English collection dating between 49 and 200 AD.

Crescent-shaped pendants, also called lunulae, were found throughout the Mediterranean in ancient times and referred to the moon goddess Luna. Girls and young women wore such a moon amulet around their neck until their wedding day, as a sign of fertility, blessing and protection against the evil eye. Such pendants also appeared frequently on Roman horse tack, because the crescent moon was a general protective symbol that had to protect horse and rider from harm.
