Hanging earrings with stone and pearls such as these were popular with Roman civilian women in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD; a similar example is in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in Madrid. The theme ties in with the jewelry seen in Fayum mummy portraits.

A conical one brass sleeve connects a green natural stone — used here as a well-considered replacement for the historic emerald or colored glass — with a river pearl, attached via a fishhook clasp.
