The Roman gladius is a replica sword based on historical swords from the Roman era. Gladii such as these were employed around the 1st century BC, and this Roman sword is of the Mainz type. Several originals of this type of gladius have been found. This gladius was used as far as Hadrian's Wall. The Roman gladius was the finest weapon for close combat in the Roman army; light and efficient in equal measure. The gladius is the weapon with which the Roman Empire was founded.
The gladius is fitted with a wooden grip wrapped in leather. The scabbard is likewise constructed from wood, wrapped in leather and adorned with brass fittings.
