Roman horse head pendant Băiceni, 3rd-4th century, bronze

This swastika-shaped pendant with four horse heads is modeled on Roman harness fittings from ancient Dacia, modern-day Romania, including finds from the Băiceni treasure. Fittings and fibulae with this horse head motif were spread throughout the Roman Empire between the 3rd and 6th centuries.

The motif was particularly popular with the Roman cavalry auxiliaries in the Balkans, where it may have had religious significance within a horse cult. Horse head motifs in this form occur among several Roman-era peoples in Southeastern and Central Europe, including on buckles, fibulae and crests, and later became characteristic of the Roman cavalry units recruited from Pannonia.
