Product description

The matres statue has been crafted after a 2nd-century original excavated in Gaul. It is now part of the collection of Museé d'Argentomagnus in France.

The Matres (Latin 'Mothers') were goddesses worshipped across North and West Europe from the 1st to the 5th century AD. They are usually depicted in groups of three upon votive stones and altars. Half of the divine names are Celtic, whilst the other half is Germanic. They were also worshipped in regions of Germania, East Gaul, and North Italy.

The statue is handmade from alabaster and stands 15 cm in height. It is presumed that these small statues were also painted so that they appeared lifelike.
