Product description
The spatha is not an exact replica of one particular museum piece, but has been based on original remains of several spathas from the second century AD, which are exhibited in the Limes Museum in Aalen, Germany. From the end of the second century, the spatha began to gain popularity amongst Roman legionaries and auxiliae, at the expense of the gladius. The spatha was considerably longer than the gladius, making it well-suited to cavalry troops as well. The infantry carried the spatha on the right side, whilst the cavalry carried it on the left. The spatha features a beautiful wooden hilt and a screwed pommel, and is supplied with a leather scabbard with a wooden core. The scabbard is fitted with a beautiful brass belt loop (for belts up to 5.5 cm wide) and brass fittings on the top and bottom.
