Product description
Umbos of this type were mounted on the Roman scutum and were sometimes crafted from brass and sometimes from bronze. Fully round umbones were also employed. Umbos have been designed to deflect enemy blows whilst also providing space for gripping the shield. Alongside their practical function, they could also serve a decorative purpose in certain cases.
The replica umbo is a particularly well-suited accessory for ambitious re-enactors looking to build their own Roman shield. It is well-suited to use as a replacement or spare part for a scutum, but it is of course also well-suited to other DIY shield projects. Constructed from brass and blackened on the reverse side, this umbo features eight pre-drilled holes for secure attachment to your shield. The necessary mounting hardware (screws with domed brass caps) is included.
