The votive statue is a replica of a piece from the 2nd century AD found in a Roman villa in Daun, near Prüm. Small statues of Juno were placed in house altars throughout the whole Roman empire.
Juno is the goddess of pure air, especially of the moon light and therefore, just as all moon goddesses, a goddess of women — an ideal of a Roman matrona, who sits as queen upon a lofty throne in heaven (Iuno Regina). She guards the wife and mother, and nearly everything belonging to her cult had to do with the female sex. Her relationship with her husband was not affected by the love adventures of Jupiter, as Zeus alienated himself from his wife Hera. Composure and dignity were the marks of Juno's character and wedded life.
The statue is hand crafted from alabaster and stands 21 cm high. It is thought that small statues such as these were painted to give them a lifelike appearance.
