Product description
This collection brings together five replica coins, formed directly after originals: an aureus of Claudius, a denarius of Augustus, a sestertius and dupondius of Nero and an as of Antoninus Pius. Together they show the principal Roman coin units, from the golden top piece to the bronze copper pieces.
Roman coins were much more than a means of payment. The obverse showed the face of the reigning emperor, while the reverse depicted gods, animals, mythical creatures or buildings to convey power, prosperity or propaganda. For example, the denarius of Augustus features a Capricorn, his zodiac sign. The letters SC stood for 'Senatus Consulto', by authority of the senate.
The golden aureus is gilded and the bronze coins have a bronze-colored finish. A rich set for collectors, re-enactors and lovers of Roman history.
