Product description
The hare was a beloved motif among the Romans and adorns many a mosaic in Roman villas. This fibula in the form of a hare was popular among Roman soldiers, who saw in it properties such as speed, agility and luck. Throughout the centuries, the hare has also been a symbol of fertility, spring and renewal, based on the exuberant behaviour during the mating season, which gave rise to the expression 'mad as a March hare'. Some traditions connect the hare with the Germanic spring goddess Eostre, to whom Easter is said to owe its name.
This brooch is made of metal and inlaid with red enamel, which gives the hare a warm, lively colour. On the reverse side is a brooch pin, so you can fasten it securely to your clothing. The design is based on a find at St Peter's Church in Lincoln.
