This enameled owl fibula is based on a remarkable Roman fibula that Danish archaeologists found at the Lavegaard settlement on the island of Bornholm. The original specimen dates from the 1st to 3rd century AD and was discovered by metal detectorists from the Bornholm Museum.
The owl is made of bronze and inlaid with enamel and colored glass, which form the large orange-and-black eyes. Such richly enameled fibulae are rare so far from the Roman Empire; the piece was probably brought by a local mercenary who had served at the Roman frontier, or was a gift from a wealthy Roman. A similar specimen has been found in England and is based on Romano-British brooches from the late 1st to early 2nd century.
On the reverse side is a brooch pin, so you can fasten the fibula securely to clothing or a cloak. An eye-catcher for your Roman or Germanic reenactment and a gem for collectors.
