Product description

The belt fitting is based on a 9th-century historical original excavated in Hordaland, Norway. Crafted in the Borre style (825–970), it is well-suited to decorating belt straps, and may equally be employed to decorate bags. The fitting measures 2.4 cm and is silver-coloured.

The fitting depicts a Borre-style backward-looking animal in profile, which was considerably less common than the gripping-beasts en face. The body of the animal is arranged to fill all available space (horror vacui). This animal motif was not confined to metalwork; it was utilised across all manner of media, amongst them wood-carvings, stone sculptures, and fabric.
