Product description
The sallet has been modelled after an example from 1480, crafted in Nuremberg in the German style. Nuremberg was renowned for its solid sheet steel, which was exported throughout Europe. Helmets such as these now form part of the collections of, amongst others, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Wallace Collection in London, the national museums of Prague and Vienna, and the Musée de l'Armée in Paris.
Sallets were produced between 1450 and 1460 and were worn throughout Europe; they were particularly popular in Germany, even amongst the aristocracy. The crest of this sallet is fashioned in the manner of the late Gothic period, and the neck piece consists of several lames to permit greater freedom of movement.
The German sallet is considered to have arisen from a blending of influences from the Italian sallet and the German kettle hats with wide rim and visor, which were employed during the first half of the 15th century. This sallet is constructed in the German style and features a neck piece consisting of several lames. Sallets of this type were most commonly combined with a bevor, though a gorget was sometimes utilised, or the helmet worn without additional neck protection. The sallet may be worn in 5 different configurations, with or without a bevor:
1, Sallet half over the head, which ensures an optimal field of view
2, Sallet half over the head and bevor closed. This provides an optimal field of view with extra protection for the face
3, Sallet flat on the head with visor open, which provides an optimal field of vision and is well-suited to shouting orders in battle.
4, Sallet flat on the head with visor open and bevor closed. This offers a slightly wider field of view than with a closed visor.
5, Sallet flat on the head with visor closed, which offers maximum protection to the head and face.
The sallet is crafted from 2 mm thick cold-rolled steel. The neck protector consists of 3 flexible parts that provide extra freedom of movement for the head. The helmet is fitted with a comfortable parachute lining and a chin strap.
The helmet has the following dimensions:
Size M: from front to back approx. 22.5 cm; ear to ear approx. 18.5 cm; max head circumference up to 61 cm.
Size L: from front to back approx. 23.5 cm; ear to ear approx. 19 cm; max head circumference up to 63 cm.
