Slavic Svantevit amulet Wolin, bronze

Product description

This amulet is modeled after a wooden cult statue found in 1974 on the Polish island of Wolin. A total of four comparable statues are known, each around 6 cm high and dating from the 9th-10th centuries, each with four faces — possibly symbolizing the four directions or the four seasons.

Svantevit was a high Slavic god, worshiped by the Ranen on Rügen and other Elbe and Baltic Sea Slavs as a god of war, god of fertility and abundance, and as an oracle — comparable to the Slavic god Perun or the Viking god Odin. At Cape Arkona on Rügen there once stood a wooden Svantevit statue in a square temple, which served as the spiritual center of the Slavs until the Danish king Waldemar had the temple destroyed in 1168. According to tradition, the statue bore a sword in one hand and a drinking horn in the other, with which a priest annually predicted the harvest.
