Recommended combination
Product description
According to Herbert Schmidt's classification, this buckler is a Type IB, featuring a round shape with tapering edges. A buckler is a small shield employed in sword-and-shield combinations for close combat during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Whilst offering poor protection against arrows and projectiles, it was particularly well-suited to restricting an opponent's movements at close range and deflecting attacks. The first depictions of this type of buckler appear in the early 14th-century Tower Manuscript, though these weapons were likely already in use in the 13th century. Bucklers of this kind remained in use until the 16th century.
The Windlass Steelcrafts buckler is well-suited to Historical European Martial Arts. It is a larger-sized buckler suitable for virtually all battle scenarios. At the centre of the buckler is an integrated boss with a diameter of 15.25 cm, permitting the deflection of strikes from other weapons. This buckler has been hand-forged and has been given a unique antique finish through an acid bath. It is fitted with a wooden grip, providing a secure hold during sword fighting.
