Product description
The surcoat is based on various illustrations in the Manesse Codex.
Wide, sleeveless surcoats were worn by the working class, whilst narrow surcoats were worn by the aristocracy. Narrow surcoats such as this one appeared in the 14th century and were sometimes considered controversial. This type of surcoat developed during a period of sexual liberalisation. The surcoat accentuates the shape of the dress worn underneath, which drew criticism from amongst some moralists. Nevertheless, the narrow surcoat remained in use well into the 15th century and, from 1525 onward, even became ceremonial attire.
Crafted from 75% wool, the surcoat is hand-dyed.
