Product description
This pincer fibula is based on a find from Burladen on the Swabian Alb, with its origins in Thuringia — an area closely associated with the Alamanni. The characteristic pincer-shaped foot end distinguishes this type of mantle pin from other Germanic fibula shapes from the same period. The Alemanni were a powerful alliance of Germanic tribes that formed in the Upper Rhine region in the early 3rd century; their name means "all men" and indicates an inclusive alliance of clans. The first mention of the Alemanni comes from Cassius Dio (213 AD), following the campaigns of Emperor Caracalla. In 260 AD they conquered the Agri Decumates and expanded their territory towards Alsace and northern Switzerland. They were destroyed in 357 AD. defeated by Rome at Strasbourg, and in 496 AD. subjugated by the Frankish king Clovis.
Performed in bronze, with a length of approx. 7 cm.
