Trifold fitting Smolensk

Product description

The fitting is based on a historical original excavated in Smolensk. Crafted in the Borre art style (825–970), it is well-suited to decorating belts and bags. It measures 4.5 x 4.5 cm and is bronze coloured.

The fitting is executed in the Borre style, featuring the typical Borre gripping-beasts en face.

Within Viking culture it was customary to obtain objects from other cultures and bestow upon them a new context. This was likewise the case for the present piece. In Frankish culture, the trifold fitting was employed by men to decorate their sword belt. Amongst the Vikings, this trifold fitting was more elaborately decorated and was given a female context, being worn as decoration on the belt or as jewellery.
