This gilded Tudor signet ring bears the monogram 'W.S.', intertwined with a love knot. The original, a gold signet ring, was unearthed in 1810 near the churchyard of Holy Trinity in Stratford-upon-Avon, where William Shakespeare was born and buried. An attribution to the poet himself is tempting, but unproven; it is indeed precisely the sort of ring an Elizabethan gentlemen wore.
Shakespeare's will, curiously enough, bears no seal: in the closing formula the word 'Seale' was crossed out and replaced by 'hand'. The ring is cast from lead-free tin and subsequently gilded for a warm gold lustre, with an adjustable band for a comfortable fit.
An evocative showpiece for enthusiasts of the Tudor period and Shakespeare, or as a special gift.
