Baltic Axe Amulet Ylipää, bronze

Product description

This amulet is modeled on a Viking Age pendant found at Ylipää near Lieto in Finland and dating to around 800 AD. It depicts the Ukonvasara, the ax hammer of the Finnish thunder god Ukko.

Unlike the Western Scandinavians, the Finns in the Viking Age did not carry a Thor's hammer, but this similarly shaped amulet, also called Ukonkirves (axe of Ukko) — like Thor's hammer, it was supposed to summon lightning and thunder. Ukko was the high god of Finnish mythology and the highest god in the Kalevala, usually depicted as a gray man with a flowing beard and a hammer in his hand; the current Finnish word for thunder, 'ukkonen', is still named after him.
