The first mentions of the bascinet (or beckenhaube) date back to 1281 in the Italian city of Padua, where it was described at the time as main protection for infantry. It is believed that the bascinet developed from a simple iron skull cap, which together with a chainmail coif was worn—either as sole protection or under a great helm. This particular one bascinet is based on historical examples from the late 14th century and was developed specifically with reenactment battles in mind.
The helmet is made of sturdy 2mm thick steel. The helmet has a brass eye pins (vervelles). The one supplied chain mail aventail (camail), which provides excellent protection for the neck and throat, is placed over these pins with a leather hem and securely secured with a leather cord.
The chainmail is made of high quality spring steel and is woven in an extremely durable 1 in 4 construction, where a row of flat, riveted rings (round rivets) alternates with a row of punched rings. For extra comfort and protection, the helmet is equipped with a fixed, quilted textiles inlay which can be precisely adjusted for a perfect fit. Historically, the camail was often combined with an extra padded doublet collar.
