Product description
The Vikingamulet is a replica of the 10th-century original found in Stora Ryk. It is now part of the collection of the National Museum of Sweden. This piece of jewellery formed part of the silver treasure of Stora Ryk, on the border near Norway. The treasure was possibly buried during an attack by a hostile tribe.
Shield jewellery comprises round amulets with a central button, sometimes featuring handle and wheel motifs, and is often found in women's graves. Such pieces were worn loose or as part of a hanging chain, possibly carrying religious significance. In Graf BJ 844, a Schildamulet was found amongst other magical symbols, presumably belonging to a Völva. This jewellery, worn principally by women of the elite, was likely employed as protection against magic and the evil eye. A reference to this practice appears in the Gongu-Hrolfs Saga, where a shield is placed over the face of a magician.
