The seax is a short sword that was mainly used by the Germanic peoples and the Vikings. This type of weapon had no guard, but possessed a straight form. The blade was single-edged. The sax was cheaper to acquire than the sword, as it was principally crafted by local blacksmiths rather than by specialised ones.
The sax was multifunctional. Amongst its uses, it could be employed in close combat during battle, yet when working the land it also functioned as a kind of machete with which plants and crops could be cut. It was likewise used to prepare food and proved useful for skinning animals. The sax is one of the most characteristic weapons of the early Middle Ages. According to the Icelandic sagas, the Vikings even preferred the sax over the sword.
The sax is beautifully authentic in appearance, with a hand-forged finish. It features a fine grip of wood and bone, and is supplied with a brown leather sheath fitted with a belt loop, from which the sax may be hung on the belt.
