The Viking helmet is based on historical originals of the spangenhelm, one of the most popular types of helmets in the Early Middle Ages. It is of the nasal helmet type. Helmets of this kind were used throughout Europe from the 9th century onwards and remained in use at least until shortly after 1066, around the time they are depicted on both Norman and Anglo-Saxon warriors in the famous Bayeux Tapestry. Helmets of this type were used by the Vikings as well as by other Germanic peoples.
From this type of spangenhelm eventually developed the well-known nasal helmet. Unlike later nasal helmets, early spangenhelms were originally constructed from multiple parts connected with spangen. This was a cheaper production method introduced during the Late Roman period. The nasal guard provides protection for the entire face whilst maintaining an optimal field of vision. Another advantage was that these spangenhelms could be repaired during campaigns.
The spangenhelm has a conical shape. This particular example features an aventail at the back for additional protection.
The helmet is crafted from 1 mm thick steel, making it well-suited to LARP, cosplay, or theatrical use. It includes a cotton liner for extra comfort and can be secured with a leather chin strap, permitting it to be worn comfortably for hours.
