Product description

The wooden carving depicts Cernunnos, as shown on the Gundestrup Cauldron. The image of Cernunnos on the Gundestrup Cauldron is one of the most famous and iconic representations of this Celtic god. Cernunnos, often associated with fertility, animals, and nature, is depicted as a man with antlers, revered both as a god of the wilderness and as a symbol of nature. On the Gundestrup Cauldron, he is shown seated in a meditative-like posture, surrounded by animals such as deer and snakes, emphasising his close connection with nature and the animal kingdom. The antlers, an important feature in many depictions of Cernunnos, symbolise his role as the ruler of the wild and as an intermediary between the human and animal worlds. The Gundestrup Cauldron, dating from the first century BCE, not only depicts Cernunnos but also other divine figures and rituals that reflect the Celts' connection with nature and the cycle of life. The rich iconography on the cauldron provides valuable insights into the religious beliefs of ancient Celtic civilisations. The wooden carving is well-suited to hanging or placing at a home altar.
