The wooden round shield by Windlass Steelcrafts is based on Viking shields from the early Middle Ages. Well-suited to Viking reenactment, Vikings Cosplay, and Last Kingdom Cosplay. A Viking shield was usually round so that Viking warriors could line up in shield wall formation and hurl spears at the enemy. Shields were also employed to break through the enemy's line. Vikings hung their shields on ships as well — as can be seen, for example, at the Gokstad ship — which protected the crew from waves and wind. Archaeological finds show that some shields were decorated with scenes from the Viking Edda and other stories, and many Viking poems are dedicated to shields. The shield is crafted from wood and features a shield boss to deflect blows from the enemy's weapon. The wood is finished in a dark colour, and the Viking shield is fitted with a steel edge for extra strength. The reverse bears a leather handle with strap and padding for the arm.
