Product description
This anointing spoon is a miniature representation of the spoon used during the coronation of an English king or queen. The silver original spoon dates from the 12th century and belongs, together with the eagle-shaped ampulla, to the oldest objects of the coronation ceremony; there is evidence that it already served at the coronation of King John in 1199.
During the anointing, holy oil from the ampulla is poured into the spoon, after which the bishop or archbishop anoints the head, chest and hands of the new monarch with it. This replica is cast in lead-free tin and gilded with 22-carat gold, which beautifully highlights the refined details.
A special piece for lovers of British monarchy and its age-old rituals.
