In the 14th century, the gambeson evolved alongside the clothing fashions of the time. Originally, the pourpoint was developed as a variant of the gambeson, but later it was also worn in an unpadded version in everyday life. This gambeson, or padded pourpoint, features padding that protects the body against chainmail and plate armour. The garment marked a major shift in European fashion, as it accentuated the shape of the body rather than the wide, long robes that were so popular in the High Middle Ages.

The garment is based upon the doublet of the 14th-century Duke Charles de Blois of Brittany, and is representative of the types worn during the 14th and 15th centuries. It may be worn on its own as armour or as padding beneath armour. The mi-parti colouring is typical of 14th-century fashion.
