Arming doublets were worn beneath plate armour from the 15th century onward. The laces on the doublet permitted armour pieces to be directly attached to it. The arming doublet was a development of the gambeson and the 14th-century pourpoint. The inside of the doublet is padded, protecting the body from blows delivered to the armour. In the late Gothic style (1450–1500), voiders and a chainmail skirt (gousset) were often added to the arming doublet. In late 15th-century Italy, it even became a civilian fashion: men who were not knights wore arming doublets, likely because the garment conveyed status and chivalric association.
The arming doublet is well-suited to 15th–16th century reenactment and LARP. Crafted from 100% cotton, it may also be worn comfortably on warm days. The sleeves are detachable and secured with laces.
