The gambeson is based on historical originals from the Middle Ages. It protects the torso, abdomen, back, shoulders and upper arms. For protection of the forearms, separate gambeson arm protectors may be purchased. The gambeson may be worn separately or as padding beneath mail or armour. At the front, the gambeson is fastened with leather belts with brass roller buckles. The gambeson is constructed from layers of soft cotton between layers of heavy cotton. The gambeson is open under the armpits to permit extra freedom of movement.
