The shape of the brigandine is very similar to the doublet, a piece of clothing that has been widely worn by citizens since the fifteenth century. Original brigandines can be seen on various paintings and panels. The fifteenth century brigandine could be opened at the front. Upper class brigandines, unlike those of the lower classes, were richly decorated with velvet. This was an expensive fabric that was highly regarded. Brigandines like this were therefore mainly used by the upper class. This brigandine protects the chest, abdomen, back and side. It consists of various metal plates and is therefore strong and flexible, the metal is covered with a layer of suede leather that looks like velvet._x000D_
